I’m going to start off real quick with this post by straight up saying that I hate MySpace.
With a passion.
First and foremost, Myspace doesn’t allow advertising (i.e. google Adsense, banner advertisements, etc.) by members on their system; however, Tom, himself, has AT&T as his number one friend? I wonder what kind of check Tom is getting for that kind of sponsorship. What the hell is that hypocrisy? I’m sorry, but if I’m not allowed to get $0.13 for how many hits I get a month, Tom (and by Tom, I mean the company that owns Tom) shouldn’t be able to get an unprecedented amount of money from AT&T (on top of revenue from all the advertisements MySpace has up already anyway, and his paycheck from FOX). But that’s just me, I might be misinterpreting the situation, but I still think his actions are irresponsible and, to be frank, bullshit.
Second, the absolute integration of MySpace into our everyday culture just drives me insane. From T-shirts to bumper stickers, you can find all sorts of merchandise that people pay for to advertise for MySpace.
Imagine that, having a company where people pay you to advertise your product. Now, I must say, in a business aspect, that is absolutely fantastic. I guess my problem here isn’t with MySpace itself, but the people that are integrating MySpace into their lives.
Speaking of these people, in particular, there are many who go out on a regular basis with the intention of taking pictures just for the purpose of posting them on their MySpace account. Instead of going out and having fun, like people used to do, they’re going out and trying to emulate what fun looks like, thus taking good pictures for MySpace.
Furthermore, there seems to be an obsession with having a good rating on other people’s MySpace accounts. Everyone wants to be in their friend’s top eight, and I’ve heard quite a bit of rhetoric in attempts to persuade others to change their top eight.
That’s ridiculous.
These obsessive users of MySpace that are growing in numbers exponentially, only show us that, with the right, limited, amount of tools, people can get sucked into a ball of repitition that allows no true creativity. And this lack of freedom (for lack of a better term) ends up killing out sites that promote individuality and self expression (i.e. deviantart.com, newgrounds.com).
Fuck you, MySpace.
