I’ve seen many American cosplayers that are better than Japanese. Both do a good job but you are providing a very parochial arguement making it appear otherwise. Most Japanese don’t even make their own costumes. Many of these are commissioned or homemade so I’d say that they are better. Just because you have a really great costume doesn’t make you a true cosplayer. I respect those that make their own much more.
Stop being bigoted please.

I do believe he said that there are some good American cosplayers. Therefore, I do believe you misused the above word.

American cosplayers are so bad, it makes me embaressed as an american to have to witness these atrocities…

Oh, I laughed at this… I have long thought as you do but never had the comparison pictures to prove it!

It also helps that your average Japanese cosplayer actually has the figure of a fantasy character. When you look at some of the American attempts, they’re quite accurate and would look fairly decent on someone thinner. I often see Japanese girls walking down the street who look like Sailor Moon and they’re not even wearing a costume!

I think some of you are missing the point. Having the exact same outfit as the character you are cosplaying does not (in itself) make you a good cosplayer. There is the believability factor, the thing that makes you say that could really be (insert random char here) in real life and not just someone dressed up as them. Lets face it if you look like Woody Allen and are a girl then the Tifa look might not work for you.

True both countries have both good and bad cosplayers but Japan has way more good ones and America has way more bad ones. Let’s face it, only in Japan could you get actual porn stars to cosplay at a game/anime/manga convention.

All I’m saying is that as a cosplayer who goes to conventions of this sort I have seen some amazing recreations of characters from all sorts of series right here in the U.S.A!

I will however… not be able to unsee some of the atrocities I’ve seen at these same events.

I am proud to say that I’m part of the “good cosplayers” here in the US. I’ve been addressed by complete strangers as Cloud even while wearing my normal street clothes.

I have to agree with CC, and perhaps take it a step further; perhaps Americans don’t need to be better cosplayers. They should worry about that after they get in shape.

Well, for argument’s sake… I have a cosplay blog. ;) Here is one particular American cosplayer that’s impressive:

Gundam Seed Destiny’s Meer Campbell
http://blog.sanriotown.com/nanao_chan:kuririnmail.com/2007/07/06/gundam-seed-destiny-meer-campbell/

Not to sure about this one, but she’s from the West too…

The Rose of Versailles’ Lady Oscar
http://blog.sanriotown.com/nanao_chan:kuririnmail.com/2007/07/24/the-rose-of-versailles-lady-oscar-franois-de-jarjayes/

Though I do see your point. Most of the cosplays I have in my blog are Asian (not necessarily Japanese). I guess it’s because Anime is made for and by the Japanese… It just fits their body type, I guess…

Would it be going too far to take the next step and bring up that there is no such thing as a good cosplayer? It’s like saying “he’s awesome at being a fat guy”. Sure, the japanese are more skilled at looking like cartoons, but when it’s all over, is that any higher an aspiration than winning a shit eating contest? It doesn’t matter whether you’ve got the blue ribbon or came in last; at the end of the day, you still spent the afternoon eating shit. Competively.

Here is a dedicated American cosplayer… she’s better than those up in the post that have won. She makes her own costumes and lives in Georgia!

And… she’s hawt!

People… a lot of the Japanese cosplayers that are pictured in conventions are PAID to be there… they are AV models. The same ones that show up as car show girls or soccer girls… They are professional “cosplayers” meaning they don’t make their own costuems, do their own makeup, etc…

AV models dress up for anything… it’s part of what they do!

WARNING: May cause some burning of the eyes… no nudes but panty alert!

Bah! has a great example of a good American cosplayer that does her own costumes. Bravo!

You know, saying there are good cosplayers and bad ones is kinda like saying there are good solitare players and bad ones, really in the end it doesn’t effect anyone (except the fat guy in the tiny sailor moon outfit but that represents the guy whos so bad he get frustrated and flips the table while your trying to enjoy your starter ceaser salad and it just ruins the whole thing, not the whole meal I mean just the salad, it just doesn’t feel the same) in the end your happy with your game of solitare or not, the only other people who care are the nitpickers “oh you didn’t see that move” and the perfectionists “geeze you didn’t win you must suck at that”. I suppose is a long tangented kinda way I’m just saying LEAVE IT ALONE ALREADY for god sakes there dressing up like cartoon carichters WHAT DO YOU FREAKING WANT!

Well, it’s partly do to the fact that in Japan, people actually get payed to cosplay, so they have to look good. Plus, you can’t find any cosplay shops in America (atleast as far as I know). But that doesn’t mean Americans shoudn’t cosplay! I’m not Japanese, (I’m Polish, mind you) but I still cosplay. Peace!
