Hmmm, this is really interesting. As a half Japanese half American girl, I have to say, people just need to stick to things they can cosplay well as. I have some white friends who cosplay well, and going to conventions I have seen disturbing cosplays and very very amazing ones here in America… :0

But in general, yeah, Americans don’t know how to cosplay. XD

LOL - this really brought a smile to my face. The killer is in the details when it comes to cosplay, for sure. If you can’t pull it off completely, don’t even try it! The American Rei and the American Yuna look like the same girl.

Classic.

Prophocie said,
May 24 2007

wow…..wow…..rofl! @ the American Rei and Yuna….just pathetic. It’s not that Americans don’t know how to cosplay its just that they don’t know where to get the costumes from. In Japan there are a ton of cosplay shops compared to America which has about zero. Then again they could import from Japan, but that would cost them to much gill. rofl! If I were to do some cosplay, I would definitely import or go to Japan and buy the right costume, because there is nothing more embarrassing than looking like the American Cloud. ROFL!

Patrick said,

You obviously found the best example possible of Japanese cosplayers and worse possible examples of Americans it’s kind of one sided.

K said,

People shall do what they want to do.
The reason Asians have an easier time is becuase cosplay is respected in Japan and stores selling outfits/commisions are everywhere.
Whereas America doesn’t cater to cosplayers. Thus, we must search for our stuff and sew it (yes I’m a cosplayer, but I’m Asian-American, so hooray for me!).

But hey, American or Asian, they have fun cosplaying, so to them they probably don’t care if others think they suck.

Alan the Great said,

OK, I’ll admit it. I can’t tell if some of the anime people are supposed to be men, women, or children.

I can sometimes use the gender of the people in costumes to tell, but I saw a few japanese girl/american guy combos.

I think part of this is that the cartoons are supposed to look like Japanese people. Japanese people have different physiology then Americans. Plus, of course, take the body fat content of your average American. Now consider the body fat content of your average American anime freak. Need I say more?

kat said,
June 16 2007

I think Alan pegged it. The av. anime fan in America is no sweet young thing with a killer bod. But what the hell, good cosplay costumes are something to ooh and ahh over, but BAD costumes… well those will entertain you forever :P It’s all for fun anyway, why hate?

fgbfx said,

no no no no no no no.

Look, ok. you showing the bad American cosplay, which yes it should be banned. People don’t pick characters that fit their body type, and it pisses me off. At least when i Cosplay i pick characters that are portly, So far my greatest suscess is Pandearen Brewmaster from warcraft 3. The problem most times isn’t a bad costume, it’s the person is either too big, too small, has to big of a bust, or way to small of a bust. Good cosplayers pick characters that suit their body type.

BTW it looks like you only posted bad cosplay fomr US and good cosplay form Japan.

The japanese, however, DO have FAR BETTER cosplay than any i’ve EVER seen.

Hey concerned constituent, You haven’t been to many conventions have you? There are way too many people that put on outfits not meant for them. At least overseas, they people try a little harder. If you don’t believe it, look at cosplay sites in Asia and cosplay sites in the US, there is a MAJOR difference.

From your list, about half of the Japanese cosplayers aren’t cosplayers at all, they are actors/models. (Actors: Cloud, Sephiroth and Vincent. Models: Tifa, Yuna). The rest look real, although you did pair them up with the worst possible example by typing in “ugly Rei” or “Ugly Yuna” into a search engine.

If people enjoy cosplaying, let them cosplay. If they look horrid, you can laugh at how much more you look like a fictional character, but generalizing an entire country off of the worst examples is just foolish.

Helen. said,
June 24 2007

But still. Most of the Asians you have here are either the models, the live actors, or not real. I did notice that most of the Americans looked like they were having fun. At least give them that. Not everyone in this world has access to a makeup artist, or a clothes designer. So i think that it takes a lot of guts to do this kind of thing, and i appreciate that.

Jwereq said,

Applecart said,

‘The Americans are just regular people throwing together costumes from what they have in their closet. NOT FAIR’

The Americans are not paid spokesmodels, or actors playing a role? Then they should keep the costumes in the closet, or better yet, burn them to a crisp. They are obviously socially blunted, sexually frustrated MMORPG addicts. These are the same people that will clamor for ‘acceptance’ of their ‘lifestyle’ from the misunderstanding, hateful masses. You will not be accepted, kids, because cosplay is stupid. Like the girl who wears her Rennaisance Faire costume at halloween time. Like the furry who parades around in a hotel lobby wearing an anime wolf suit.
Lil’ American Rei.. you should be ashamed of yourself for showing your giant mooseknuckle in public. You should all be ashamed. You are adults, or soon to be.
Shame is nearly dead as a learning tool these days. Shame would have kept these people from acting so rediculous outdoors. Grow up. You don’t have a magic sword or dragon to fight. You are trevor, and you work at the Cinemark.

Serafina said,
June 26 2007

Okay, more than a few things irritated me about the comments that have been made. The list herein describes my peeves:

-First off, the idiot who said that the Japanese versions of Vincent, Cloud, and Sephiroth are from the Advent Children movie needs to go see that CG movie again. Do you know what CG is you moron? It means COMPUTER GRAPHICS, NOT REAL ACTORS. Maybe you just live in a cave or something, I don’t know. Regardless, you’re an idiot.

-For all the people who insist that all of the Japanese people above are ‘professional’ models, how on earth do you know that? Japanese, correction, ASIAN people in general have kick-ass bods that can pull off these costumes; you can do your own search and find any number of fantastic costumes with an Asian body in it.

-Apparently anime these days uses real-life actors. I would love to know when this happened, because last time I checked anime was created with ANIMATION, not live-action; therefore, there is no such thing as ‘real’ actors, whatever that’s supposed to mean. And since when is anyone who has a little imagination automatically labeled a ‘real’ actor? Whatever dudes.

-And for those of you who bitch and moan about Americans not having access to any good costume stores, have you been to a thrift store lately? I find that stores specializing in retro styles have awesome costume pieces. And if someone is just throwing together something from out of their closet, then I want no complaints. A good costume is worth it’s money and takes time and careful planning to create. If you want to look nice, you better be willing to sacrifice for it.

And that concludes my rant :)

Pathos said,

well, you see, basically you ignored the hot white girls, and sexy white boys that also cosplay, and focused on the worst that show up at cons xD. i’m sure there is bad cosplay in japan too.

Pathos said,
June 27 2007

ah, i read the comment above me, and i have some explanations for her/him.

-many anime’s have live action counterparts, so real live action shows are made using real people.
-many of the models are well known, and aren’t hiding that they are being paid.
- i didn’t read people saying that the cosplaters were from the movie, but that they were paid by the people who made the movie to dress up like that.
-and you say thrift stores… i know, i make my costumes (and i put time/money into them, lol) but what we have here in american cannot compare to the choices in japan.

and oh man, i have seen some KICKASS white people in cosplay too. many anime characters LOOK white. they have brightly colored eyes that are huge, and light colored hair… super tall, girls with huge boobs… the list goes on.

Mark said,

I stumbled on this page and have absolutely no experience whatsoever with cosplay (although I knew what it was beforehand).
That said, it’s painfully obvious that all the American pictures are of amateurs (and likely the worst pictures the author could find) while the majority of the Asian pictures are of professionals (in terms of model, costume, makeup, even the camera work).

I’m Asian myself, and there are obviously a lot of factors that make Asian cosplay more aesthetically pleasing than Western cosplay (availability of costumes and less social stigma, body type, and the fact that the characters in these RPGs are almost always follow some Asian phenotype), but is something like this really necessary?
Looking at the American girl in the Yuna picture, she is fat, physically unappealing, and the costume is a very poor choice for her, but she looks like she’s having fun and obviously put some time into making the costume (as opposed to buying it).

What’s next? Maybe write an article on why unattractive people should not be allowed to go to beaches.

How about a list of cosplay dos and don’ts instead? I swear, I see so many bashing things like this and offering little if any help at all to make things better.

I plan to try cosplay at my first convention, not because I think I can do it, but because I wish to have fun, and I don’t plan to half ass it either. And there is the option of being an original character.

Judging an entire country by a few bad examples is moronic, hypocritical and bigoted

Ima be frank and blunt

The “good” Japanese cosplayer either look as ridiculous as their American counterparts, or look like they are made of plastic. ASIDE from the Asian Yuna *drools*

Anyway, those pictures are very selective. It’s not an even comparison. It’s obvious that the Japanese cos players put a lot of money into their gettup, while the Americans look like they just bought a costume from a Halloween store.

Still, some of these pics are funny. and a worthy thread overall.

My 2 cents.

As others have said, the Asian cosplayers look like they were professionals paid to do the costume stuff and then supplied with the costume, unless everyone in Japan is an expert tailor. Yeah, the American ones are obviously homemade and perhaps were not wisely chosen to match the wearer’s body type, but who cares? I have personally seen some very good cosplays including Lulu from FFX and Chun-Li from street fighter.
In response to Applecart: Yes, indeed, how DARE anyone have fun or be different from you? Simply unacceptable, eh?

“ASIAN people in general have kick-ass bods that can pull off these costumes; you can do your own search and find any number of fantastic costumes with an Asian body in it.”

Please tell me you’re kidding. Some do look great, sure.

Sorry if it bursts anyone’s fantasies, but yes, there are fat ugly cosplayers in Japan too. They would be living in their mom’s basement, only in Japan most houses don’t have a basement, so they live in 3-mat rooms on the second floor of their mom’s house surrounded by old food wrappers and 13094106 little plastic toys bought in vending machines. And yes, regular people consider them nerds, and not in a good way either.

That said, I think the American Vincent isn’t half bad, neither is the blond Sailor Moon sitting on the back of the sofa. I like the…Naruto guys too, although they’re doing a more cartoony interpretation I think, with the big wig and less detail (the guys next to the balding guy).

Something else to consider, models or not the J-pictures have better photography. Certainly the backgrounds are better. The US ones are often clearly “hey, look, my friend took this in the dealer’s room at the Con” which doesn’t help the mood.

For additional hilarity, we can examine the phenomenon of Japanese wannabe rappers (distinguished from actual Japanese rappers, I’m talking just the style kids who wear the costume and hilariously misuse words in the same way a certain segment of anime fandom seems obsessed with putting “kawaii” “ne” into regular English conversations).

blue_eyed_bandit said,

Lol, the “American” in your Final Fantasy Vincent isnt even American, must less shot in America. You should try harder.

The problem is that anime fans in north -america are typically overweight nerds. In japan anime is more common, so you have more attractive people attending those conventions, not to mention many of them are getting payed to take those pictures.

If you payed some hot white people to dress up in custom made costumes, they would look great to. If anything, white people are better looking cause our women got tits, and our guys are not skinny shrimps. Hell, most japanese want to look white.

IRL, the teeth, skin and costumes are just as hideous as Americans. The only good point? They aren’t as fat and know how to use photoshop. The end.

I suggest in the future, you find hot white cosplayers as well, because they do exist.

I agree with this to an extent. I am only good at cosplaying one or two characters, and don’t pretend that I can look like anyone else. On the whole, I have seen an extremely amount of outright gross American representations.

Two things may be the problem: 1- Laziness. 2- Trying to look like a cartoon character.

Aren’t the characters representations of real life? Why do you then try and look like the cartoon itself instead of looking like the character as an artistic representation of something that is real?

Seriously? You CAN’T be serious, and think this is as black and white as you try and make it out to be. it’s F-ing raceism, in essence! For one, you’re compairing a culture that has had this ideal for what… 50 years? And one that has had it for… 5 years. I know those aren’t the real dates, but Japan has places for the costumes, and a large portion of the people know someone who can make costumes if anything. In america, cosplayers are people with some extra cash, and free time to make their costumes.
Sure, they aren’t great… and some people just have no taste in what looks good on them. But at the same time, Anime is aimed at Japanese people to being with, as in body type, so of course they’d look best. It’s like when a white person tries to emerse himself in african culture. He just doesn’t really fit. Heck, American’s always try and mingle… but at lest they TRY, isntead of isolating themselves.

But back to this complete pile of steaming BS… you picked the BEST Japanese cos-players EVER, and the WORST American ones. Do a bit more research, and you’d find some better americans, and worse japanese…. then agian, maybe not worse, japanese… They’re more ashamed of their shame. Money and availability of stores that sell COSTUMES is what you are promoting here.

Fantasy should remain in the mind, so when you take expensive Japanese movie models whose sole purpose in life is to model these characters, and place them against amateur part time cosplayers, guess who comes off as most accurate in portrayal?

Plus, you could improve your spelling, try throwing some money at it, hire a tutor.

That’s my comment, not my ‘commnet’.

Run Mepis, for gaming, for fun.

I do agree to a certain extent that Americans can never pull off Cosplay - I mean, their bodies are not the right proportion, it’s totally different from us Asians (Not saying americans are fat because there are thin Americans out there too) but just that it doesn’t match. also they cant find the right costumes… but yeah… Americans can copy their own animation characters, that would fit better…

I think I would’ve found this funny if there had been a better attempt to find a) better American Cosplayers and b) use more non-pro Japanese Cosplayers.

I’m not saying that your argument isn’t valid, but it’s kind of stupid to say that Americans shouldn’t Cosplay because you find bad examples. Find some good examples and make the same argument (by the way, the American Rikku looked more like the character than the Japanese one; people just like the Japanese one better because she’s hot).

By the way, I am not and never will be a Cosplayer. It requires sewing skills that I lack, and there are no characters that I could (or would want to) be & I like straight-up costuming (i.e. Medieval, Pirate) with what I have on hand.

Aside from the fact that the American costumes suck and they don’t do anything for the facial features in these pictures, this was written in a bias.

The bias of this is that the Japanese look good and the Americans look bad. So with that you grab the best Japanese and the worst American photos and you have your article. Not good for comparisons…

Putting that aside, however, why is it that when I look at that American Cloud picture I think of Mario (from “The Mario Brothers”)? Sad day indeed…

Oh yes, and those pictures the American Rei and Yuna nearly had my stomach turn about what I just ate.

1) Decent photos (not cheap-ass digital snapshots).
2) They aren’t fat-ass americans. maybe if you researched and found some good-looking americans involved in cosplay (to compare w/ the hot japanese chicks… and dudes) the results may be better. of course, most good-looking americans avoid this culture all together, so this may be a moot point.

A funny article. I can see how some would take offense. But seriously, the whole reason the author even created this article is to give a one-sided look on cosplaying. It is true that Japan has a wider selection of costumes and that Americans can arguably cosplay just as well. What I have to say is: If you like cosplaying, do it if you’re not too embarassed or shy. Personally, I think cosplaying is retarded. But hey, you’re entitled to your opinions and so am I. I have to agree with previous posts saying that people should choose a character that fits their body type. It’s generally a wise choice so that the effect is more authentic. Just because you have an authentic costume, doesn’t mean you will match the character’s appearance. Maybe one day I’ll muster up the required shamelessness to cosplay, or even go to a convention for that matter. (Sorry, but I have to say, after my first one… I just can’t stand the many people who have no sense of personal hygiene.) I might try cosplaying one time or another by starting off as someone… normal. Like, L or something. That could work.

Koyukix said,

That comparison is really unfair to the American side, you posted the worst examples that you can find for them and showed off most the best for the Japanese side.

I’ve seen alot of American cosplays that really looked great.

If you’re going to “research”
atleast don’t be bias about it.

and that FFx-2 Rikku doesn’t even look good, the only thing thing she was better at on his American counterpart was the hair.

There’s a lot of bad looking Japanese cosplay too, they’re not really shown much because well, they’re bad. but yeah…

America has a lot of bad looking cosplays.

Actually, It’s just that most amateur American cosplayers has a mentality to do things the easy way. If they can color the wig with a spray paint they would color it. If they can modify a orange shirt to make a Naruto costume they’ll do it.

Japan cosplay is much more commercialized. At many conventions with a heavy corporate presence, companies hire good looking girls to cosplay their characters. There’s store that’s made especially for cosplays, they even have costume in different sizes…

That’s pretty hard to compete with.

but, there’s still good cosplayers out there. It’s evil to label every american cosplayer as ‘bad’ because the majority of them looks bad.

Random said,
August 11 2007

Do you know how crazy most japanese cosplayers even photoshop thier pictures? the only thing that doesn’r look photoshopped is the Rikku, Rei and Naruto pictures.

I’ll admit I’ve never been to a japan convention, but my cousin has and most of the pictures she has taken is nowhere near what the mainstream Japanese picture looks like. The only thing they got an advantage of is body size and well, premade costumes.

I’m pretty sure they couldn’t pull a zangief, ryu or ken [ street fighter] look.

they would look so pretty, if they did.

What do you expect? All the examples you give are of Japanese animé, it kind of goes without saying that the Japanese cosplayer will almost always look better and closer to proportion. Though I have to point out that all the Japanese ones had costumes that looked professionally made while the Americans were decidedly home-made looking, makes me somewhat suspicious of your selection.

Furthermore if you want to see Japanese people looking ugly and stupid at the same time go to any karaoke bar in Japan.

There is also a pretty good reason why the Japanese are so into animé because they suck at making real movies and by the time they hit their late 20’s early 30’s they’re ugly as sin.

Needless to say I’m neither Japanese nor American.

But ok, I’ve never been to a cosplay convention, nor do I ever want to be seen at a place like that, but I’m pretty sure the Americans aren’t as good at cosplay as the Japanese.
I live in Japan and I know that in the Japanese culture, you dedicate yourself to everything you do and you do it at your best. You’ll find the best customer service here, and anything in general will be the best because a Job to a Japanese person is not just a Job, it’s something they enjoy, it’s something they commit themselves to, and they do it to the best of their ability, they take real pride in what they do.
That type of behavior isn’t taught to people in America.

Blondie said,

I don’t know if anyone has brought this up yet, but to the select few who have commented on how it is easier for Asians to cosplay because anime/manga characters are primarily Asian-looking, I implore you to take a closer look at these characters. Personally, I find it hilarious when Asians try to cosplay as characters such as Sailor Moon, Chi from Chobits, etc, because last time I checked, Asians aren’t born with blonde hair or large, wondrous looking eyes. So when you see an Asian throw on a tremendously tacky blonde wig that drips down to the floor and pop in those lovely fake blue contacts that everyone hates so much, it is a pretty laughable site. Now don’t get me wrong, I’m not trying to imply that every single anime is such the situation, as I would be no different than the incredibly ignorant author of this post, just that the majority of main characters possess western features. However, as this is not as black and white as the author suggests, if you have the material, financing, and what would be a tremendous plus, physique, then dress up as whoever the hell you please, regardless of race. As long as you bear slight resemblance to your idol, then what is the harm? But please, drop the whole “Americans can’t cosplay,” because it only reflects badly on yourself and shows you for the ill-bred and narrow-minded person you are. Just to show that this thread can be reversed one-handed, here are some truly lovely pictures.

Being older, I find this quite comical.
First, the feud resembles the ones I had when I was a kid, concerning who was going to be the good guy and who was stuck as the bad.
Second, in dressing and pretending, it is not as much as who looks the part but who can act the part. A heavy person cannot act as a small flower among small trees (slim people). Likewise slim people cannot act as a Lord Of The Rings ogar among heavy frightened children. If you are going to play, play. If you want to criticize look in the mirror. What can you pretend to be and be good at it.

The difference between American and Japanse cosplayers is, the American cosplayers post bad pictures of themselves and the Japanese do not (but if you look on usagichan.com for instance under Comiket you will see tons of bad cosplayers from Japan too). Also way to go for missing out on GOOD American cosplayers. Face it. Your comparisons suck. Go whine to someone else who cares.

That is not to say that there are characters that can’t be cosplayed by caucasians. There are, you just have to discern which ones a white person can do better.

Disagree, and I think this was an incredibly stupid thing to say.

1) If you are going to “cherry pick” your photos, I can find plenty of well executed costumes worn by good looking Americans, and just as many poorly done costumes worn by less-than-hot Japanese.

2) The “mundanes” would ridicule *all* of these people as losers or weirdo’s, so it’s kind of pathetic that we fans feel the need to ridicule each other. It’s all about the love of anime and the fun of playing a role. No need to insult people just becuase they don’t have faces and bodies like models, or mad costume making skills!

Taco says: “Fat people shouldn’t cosplay. Period.”

WRONG. The two most essential ingredients of good cosplay are A) using quality materials, and B) choosing a character similar to yourself in body type and appearance. I am a 40-year-old, 5′1″ woman who tops the scales at around 200 pounds. So, am I trying to cosplay a fit teenage hero or heroine? Of course not. This year, I chose Vivi from Final Fantasy IX, a character who is short and round, and whose face is covered. My husband, who is 6′ tall and keeps himself in excellent shape by practicing kendo, chose Auron from Final Fantasy X, a tall, fit character in his 30’s. Both costumes were made out of excellent materials, mostly hand-dyed leather and the sort of heavy-duty cotton used in martial arts gear, and when we wore them for the first time to Sakura Con earlier this year, it took us nearly two hours to get from the front door to the registration table because we couldn’t move three feet without being asked for more photos. Not bad for a FAT AMERICAN CHICK and her admittedly gorgeous mate.

Moral of the story: sweeping generalizations tend to make you look like an ignorant dick.

Someone here said that America doesn’t have any cosplay costume shops! NEITHER DOES PORTUGAL! Asians cosplayers can be sometimes models or they use photoshop to fix things. It doesn’t really matter either it’s ghetto or something. they’re doing their best! But when it comes to fat people, you guys,go ahead. Do as many costumes as you like. If someone makes fun, judges, etc. just ignore them.If you guys want to go on a diet, good luck. but just don’t lose TOOO much weight!

I think it is fantastic that the fat ugly morons actually dress up and show themselves off in public. I mean, in any other society a person would kill themselves in shame after such a stunt.

Either the infamous american ego has grown so incredibly huge that ugly people dont realize they are ugly anymore. Or being fat/ugly is accepted as being different and perfectly normal.

I am pretty sure there are allot of ugly Japanese people who would like to cosplay but wont because they are to ashamed of their appearance. So which society got it right, really?

Being aware you are fat/ugly should be a good thing since that makes you realize you need to get your fat ass out of the couch / do something about your appearance. Being unaware of it like some of these cos players seem to be is just pathetic. On the counter side, not daring to show off because of the same reason isn’t such a huge source of life long happiness.

Since I live in Sweden we don’t have that problem since the good lord blessed us with divine beauty.

Okay, I’m Asian American and think cosplaying and all that anime crap is just stupid. People who like it become loners and nerds. As much as I dislike it I’ve got to respect it, if people like doing all that anime shit then let them do it, its their life, not mine.

I agree with most of the friendly people here that there are good American cosplayers and bad Japenese cosplayers. This is racism. Not all asians got great bods. Lets take me for example, I’m skinny and my younger bro is taller than me.

Americans DON’T suck and I agree that they got more balls than any other people. Example: The American Revolution. If I weren’t in the U.S., I’d be eating grasshoppers and taking a shit on the ground back in Laos. Hell, the reason why people hate the U.S. is because they’re jealous of democracy and diversity.

I noticed some people are calling everyone losers and other names here. What the fuck, leave everyone here alone and stop with the insults. How do we know you don’t do this crap? You think your’re badass behind your computer.

I don’t really care about Final Fantasy but that Japanese Tifa is the hottest Asian woman I’ve ever seen in my life.

All in all, this is a never ending conflict between racism and culture. Can’t we all just get along?

[…] Now, in all technicality, this should not be a way for people to be racists and point out how the Japanese and/or Asian community looks more like the said character than the Western Community. Seriously. I get annoyed by the racist blog postings I see all over the Internet. […]

all this proves is fat chicks and people who do not want to spend 3 weeks to 4 monthes on a custome should not cosplay.

I am an american and I have seen wonderful ones, but they require a lot of time charector designs, steches, lots of materials, ect….

yes americans on average are way below par on these designs, but some of us can actually be good

@Applecart.
You say to get a life. You, who goes onto a blog to flame people. Well, have fun with that.
Cosplay is about FUN.
And entertaining people, whether with skits, or just by showing the amount of effort you put into it.
Oh, and learn to spell.

The Japanese cosplays ARE amazing, and the American ones ARE bad. However, you are sure to find good American cosplays and bad Japanese ones.
And besides, cosplay started in Japan, they have an advantage! :P

White people usually don’t have the right facial structure to be anime characters. It’s not like it’s an insult or something, it’s just that japan’s cartoons and videogames are based on their own aesthetics and not America’s.

holy shit
i hate american cosplay
i would rather live in japan with my sister than america anyday

This comparison is totally unfair, because you found the already bad looking americans , in pictures with bad costumes only, not even showcasing the good cosplayers of america. Second of all, of course asian people are going to be fricking better at playing these characters BECAUSE THE CHARACTERS ARE ASIAN TO BEGIN WITH!. Just because skinny asian chicks look better in skimpy out fits than fat american ones doesnt mean you are better at cosplaying. Might i point out how in all the male characters the cosplayers barely show their faces or body? and when they do it makes the costume worse. Asian people, open your eyes. Not everyone in america is fat and ugly. I would even say at least the men of america look ten times better than the pasty asian guys who dress up in these concealing costumes. You know if there ever was a shirtless male character in anime, even an ” superior asian cosplayer” wouldnt be able to pull it off and still look good.

Meh. All Japanese anime is so unutterably lame and atrociously aniumated, the American contestants didn’t look any more ridiculous tha n the original cartoon models they copied.
At least they pointed out just how atrociously trite anime is to begin with.

Alright, you made some good points… But just because you put all of those terrible cosplayers on the list doesn’t mean that ALL Americans suck at putting together a good costume. I’ve seen TONS of amazing costumes somtimes, and you’re right, I do see these pathetic ones also. So, maybe we should just ban all the people who suck at it? =P

Okay, yeah those Americans should be shot. And the Japanese cosplay picture you have under Sephiroth is not dear Sephie…It is Kadaj. Okay, back to the subject. If Americans are going to cosplay, they should make sure their costumes don’t look like CRAP!!! I am an American otaku, and I am personally offended by the stupidity of my fellow countrymen…And women…They should all be shot! All of them! If you’re gonna do cosplay, DO IT RIGHT!!!!

I don’t think that cosplay should be banned in america, just banned from obese people, i’ve seen some good ones in america, and some bad, but that doesn’t mean the whole country should give it up, just the fat people

WowPeopleAreThisIgnorant said,

First of all, there is nothing that someone “shouldn’t” do.
Unless it produces health risks, that’s an exception.

Like everyone already said, this is a very biased argument with the worst American and best Japanese.

And Yeah82, your comment totally defines the whole isolationist thing.
“anime are made by japanese…they shud be the only one cosplaying it. ”

So since Japan makes most of the electronics, they should be the only ones using it. Japan’s economy basically depends on other people using their stuff. And not only Japan. Other countries do too. That comment is just very stupid. If someone found a cure for AIDS in Germany, would you like them to say that only Germans could use it? Just think before you speak.

“Fat and ugly” are just society’s labels on people who don’t fit the celebrity image. I never really thought anyone would say these things, but some of you guys really surprised me about what a bitch the world is.

You’re judging people by their weight, saying they shouldn’t be allowed to do something. So I guess from now on, people who aren’t a size 2 and 6 feet tall are not allowed to be actors/actresses.

I understand what some of you are saying about picking a character that fits you best, but others of you are just plain assholes.

And you should be able to cosplay at any age you want. Don’t let anyone stop you.

Guys, you could be hurting a lot of feelings with all the “fat and ugly people shouldn’t do this and that.” You’re one to say who is ugly.

And some of you (GAB) whose amazing comeback is “Americans can’t spell” because one person on one site spelled comments wrong, really need to work on those retorts.

I think this’d be more “Fat people shouldn’t cosplay” than “Americans shouldn’t cosplay”…

Ambrose said,

It is true that americans have no clue how to cosplay. Just like americans do not understand to not eat when you are bored (which is the reason why they are so large and lazy, next to looking “cool” infront of people), or just like how Americans do not understand that silicone does not belong in your body and that all those dieting schemes are fake. But you cannot blame them; being an english girl who is brought up in America, I can admit that americans are stupid all around and even being a 19 year old 94 lbs (high metabolism.. It hurts alot, dont wish for it.) 5′ girl,I hope to leave this place because I do not want my upcoming son or daughter to live in a horrid place like this.

Honestly, I don’t see how you can say these things.

I’ve seen more then enough terrible Japanese Cosplays. You’ve only shown the bad in America. How about focusing on the good? For instance…

They look very, very American to me.

There ya’ go. Another good one.

Next time, be sure to remember to tell how many of those ‘good Japanese cosplays’ are actually commissioned, too. It might save you t
